I recently read a blog post that ruffled my feathers a bit. Basically it was the same old “all black americans are mixed with something somewhere down the line, and these self-proclaimed ‘biracial’ people are no less black than us, and to top it all off they’re always so negative about black people.” I had to leave a comment. I kind of liked it, so thought I would post it here…
When you said “there is no need to go back and claim the Native American and European American ancestry that does not claim me” you made a point that encourages me to continue to defend my biracial identity. Your Euro ancestry may not claim you, but mine does claim me. It claimed me every time my white dad picked me up from school, took me to work with him, took me to Europe on family vacations. When my white grandparents took me to the doctor or to the mall. When my father calls me on the phone, sings with me at weddings, and watches my videos because he wants to know who I really am and what parts of himself he sees in here. THAT is the main, and perhaps only, difference between 1st generation biracials and intergenerationally mixed “blacks”. But it’s a big difference. Someone commented about having a fair relative who could pass for white, but doesn’t. She identifies as black. Her parents are black. She is steeped in black culture- whatever version(s) of it she was surrounded by. It would feel weird for her to claim anything else no matter what she looks like. Same for me. I could pass for black, but it doesn’t feel right because I know even if no one else does that I come from white too. I love white too. Even if most white people don’t know it. I know it. It’s who I am. And who I say I am has got to have more validity than what most people say I am. I don’t live with most people. I live with me.

Good response. I know how you feel. Sometimes I will read something and be so bothered by it that I have to write or say something. I think some people think they have been voted to be the overseers of reality, and in their lofty ambitions they are full of delusions of grandeur.
Regarding this ZeitMan character. It is interesting that he is so sick that he had to find your blog. He is so sick that he had to read, or partially read your post. He is so sick that he had to put together a response, and he is so sick that he has to threaten you.
Most of all it is interesting that people standing up for who they are bring out these types. I am believer that when something you do, say, or write brings out these types you may be on to something. So keep on doing what your doing.

I’ve encountered so many bigoted and highly irrational people on the internet (real life too), who are so set in their ways, that I think it’s pointless trying to reason with them. I agree that insults and thinly veiled threats of violence are counterproductive and really have no purpose in a civilized discussion, but I’m certainly not going to take a loving approach to extreme hatemongers and bigots.
The last thing Brad wants is a civilized discussion. The anonymity of the internet emboldens him, where in an actual social setting out side his peer group he is far less likely to say such things. Would you be surprised if Brad wasn’t white? Assuming he is white, do you know why he is racist? I’ve dealt with my fair share of bigots, and you can actually kill them with kindness. Sure I’m not going to completely change their thinking, but I’ll force them make yet another exception. Certainly, this approach is nothing new as MLK, Gandhi and Mandela practiced this and is found in the Old testament/Hebrew Bible, Proverbs 25:22-23 and in most Eastern philosophies and religions. I stumbled on your site and it’s so comforting to know that there are people like me out there. Growing up bi-racial in Kansas was a constant battle to ‘choose a side’. I felt that by choosing my Mexican mom was to deny I had a Black father or vice versa and I could never do it. Only recently have I been able to rejoice in the richness and beauty of both cultures.
And I’m so sorry that this terrible person ‘Brad’ has come to sully your space with his negativity and pain. He is a sad individual deserving of nothing but a wave of positivity – sent from very far away!

Strange? Ultimately it makes no difference to me if Tiffany is male or female, only that we share common experiences. I can’t help the fact that women are much more attuned to social issues than men and women tend to figure it out long before we men do (if ever). I will continue to support Tiffany and the movement.

I’m here primarily because Tiffany is a compelling person with a compelling life story. (The fact that she is also incredibly easy on the eyes does not hurt.) I also find the biracial narrative to be incredibly fascinating, as it has been largely ignored by mainstream American society. (We have this tendency to think too much in terms of black and white.)
I’ve read a handful of books (i.e. “The Color of Water” by James McBride, et al.) on the subject, and I’ve even dated a biracial girl, but my familiarity with the biracial narrative is fairly lacking.
Women are often a lot more more socially conscious than men, and that keen awareness can translate into really captivating and expressive writing. Also, Tiff just happens to be one of the best social commentators on YouTube.

Wow, I was wondering why there was so many comments on this post. Crazies are out in full effect.
Anyway, I have to say that I was definately one of those people who was like “what is so special about being mixed, we are all mixed” until you showed pics of your family on your vlog. When you were showing pics of your white family with your white cousins, a little light-bulb went off in my head. I don’t have a white family, or white cousins. I have a Black multi-generational mixed family. Despite what we look like, we are all culturally Black. Not so for you and other first-generation mixed people.
I think Black people have been so hurt by racism, colorism and just the stigma that Blackness tcarries that it seems that first-generational mixed people are just more “light-skinned” people that don’t want to be associated with the stain of blackness. Or just want to be Black when it is convenient for them. I felt that way with the whole Tiger Woods caucbliasain thing. To me, it felt like he was saying that Black was something awful that he didn’t want to be associated with. But lisening to your vlogs and Mixed Chicks chat, I have changed my opinion. There are still somethings that I disagree with you guys on, but it is interesting to hear a different perspective.
So keep up the good work! You really are making a difference.

We are in a tough spot as mixed people because it is true we are as mixed as black americans but we are not claiming we are mixed because we think we are better than or denying anyone. We are raised by 2 totally different cultures. So how does one not include a family member in your make up that paid for your college and took care of you when you were sick and changed your diapers? And my family is Italian they barely spoke English and I learned their traditions and cook their foods just like I did my mothers….I have their last name should I pretend they don’t exist cause some other people who have not been in my life are upset that mention that they are my family as well?
