I used to work for the company that manufactured Cream of Wheat. One month our company news bulletin had a display of artwork featuring the man whose face appears on those boxes. When I inquired about what kind of compensation had been made to the man, his family and/or descendants, I was shocked at the reply I received. He was never paid a dime. I was told that the man’s image was a compilation of different black railroad porters the artist had seen in his travels. I didn’t buy it then and I don’t buy it now. Even if they had paid that man one penny for each box of cereal on which they used his image, his family would be multi-billionaires.
