I can’t believe I’ve had a blog for however long I’ve had this blog, and have not yet mentioned Jennifer Beals. Well, the time has come! Here is a quote from an article in H Monthly Magazine…
“Once one part of the collective sees themselves represented and is given permission to celebrate their own authenticity, then it helps the rest of the collective to see how everyone is connected,” she reasons. “It behooves all of us to have everyone experience their deepest, most beautiful, most profound and powerful self, because those people are more apt to give their gift to everyone else rather than shudder in fear….There used to be whole realms of people who weren’t talked about—whose very existence didn’t seem worthy subject matter for pop culture. Now that’s starting to change a little bit.”
I honestly don’t know anything about H Monthly Magazine, but I thoroughly enjoyed the article and my love and admiration for this biracial lady grew maybe like two sizes when I read it.
That’s a good quote. Never heard of that magazine though.
Love love JB. I’m sure you’ve seen her GLAAD speech on Youtube in all its awesome storytelling glory.
Here’s the text:

I love this part – “The notion that I am part of a narrative where I can offer up some sort of mirror, however imperfect to someone who may have never before seen themselves represented is very exciting. To know that you EXIST and then to know that you exist in a larger, beautiful context and then finally to know that WE ALL exist as one larger, extended group is very fulfilling. To elucidate those connections that lead us all into the state of belonging to the family of humanity is one of the things the L Word strives to accomplish. “
To Tiff and Martine: Both of these quotes from Jennifer Beals…. so beautiful. The words are very powerful and true! I have loved this beautiful, biracial woman since I was a little girl and I probably would not be watching the L Word if she was not on it! Thanks for sharing these 🙂
hey tiff. great quote. i like the part that saids “It behooves all of us to have everyone experience their deepest, most beautiful, most profound and powerful self, because those people are more apt to give their gift to everyone else rather than shudder in fear…” this is so true.
I heard of Jennifer Beals before. i didnt know she was biracial til u mention her in ur vlogs. i seen her in flashdance. never seen any of her other movies tho. i know she’s on that show the L word. i only heard of that show cuz i found out that alice’s song Dream was debut on there.(what a coincendence) lol anyhoo thanks for sharing. 🙂
I always found Jennifer Beals to be very interesting. I think I also respected that she did not seem to be engrained in the hollywood glitz and glamour. I found a lot of respect for her in the movie “The Bride” since it was interesting how that movie an element of “who am I” invested in it. I remember how I had a crush on her in my younger days.
I like the part where she says:
“Once one part of the collective sees themselves represented and is given permission to celebrate their own authenticity, then it helps the rest of the collective to see how everyone is connected,”
Thanks for sharing.
As always, I enjoy reading your blog. Anyway, I think Jennifer has expressed very well what many of us in the collective are feeling, and I agree.
I have never heard of that magazine. I love Beals though. Ever since Flashdance I was a die hard fan=) Haha
P.S.-I loved your vlog regarding Ann Coulter on the View. I caught up with youtube last night!
