so you know how i mentioned that i was feeling over-saturated in “biracial” the other day? well, that evening i went to visit some friends that i hadn’t seen in a long time. i was excited not only to see them, but to leave “biracial” at home and just enjoy the night. about 15 minutes after I got there my 6 (almost 7) year old friend, Ben goes to get something to show me. he comes back with the game “othello”. now Ben and his younger brothers might have more toys than any kids i know. i just could not believe that of all of things he’s acquired in the year since I’ve seen him the first thing he wanted to show me was this game where one person “is black” and one person “is white” and you make strategical moves to overtake the board with your color. i guess there’s just no escaping it.
after othello we made an origami ball. Ben is already a master origami-ist (i am sure that’s not what it’s called), and he taught me how to do it. He made four sides in the time it took me to make two. that being said, i think i did a pretty good job. and it was really fun!

omg i couldnt help but laugh at this post tiff. your right i guess there is no way of escaping it. i didnt know there was a game for “Othello.” sounds interesting. i saw a play of that here in Atlanta so good. anyways great pictures of the origami. the only think i can make out of paper is an airplane and a crane. lol
Othello seems like an interesting game. That lil guy Ben sounds like a lot of fun to be around. I don’t know how to make anything out of paper except a box, maybe a triangle, and a sphere=balled up piece of paper. LOL π
lol @ tami with the sphere-balled up paper. i can make those too. lol and a fortune teller. who doesnt know how to make those!? lol
your comment about “no way of escaping” made me giggle. my bio mom talks about it like that too. when i once asked her what her favorite ice cream was, “chocolate or vanilla?” she said “both, because i’m chocolate and vanilla and there is no way out.”
p.s.-i’ve been watching a lot of your vlogs lately! i loved the one about how you didn’t know you had curly hair until you were 19…that’s crazy!
Although Othello is just a game, the strategies and tactics use to ‘win’ the game gives you some insight into how purist think and how this state of race relations came to be. There is a whole area of study called game theory, which looks at competitive strategies employed by individuals or groups in order to have a favorable outcome. The reality series Survivor is an excellent example of game theory. It is a combination of competitive and cooperative strategies in order to win. The beauty of the show is that it is deep or shallow(pun intended) as the viewer wants it to be. One on one competitive board games such as Othello or chess are ideal outcome games, meaning zero-sum games. One side wins and the other loses. However in the real world, ‘interaction’ , competitively or cooperatively causes the competitors to change and outright victory is elusive. For example, the ‘captured’ pieces in Othello may become a third color, loyal to one side or the other or to niether side depending on their numbers. Sounds familiar? It’s just a game…
Wow, Army2k08!! Interesting…
Yes, I’m just full of useless information as some of my friends would say. When enough people decide they don’t want to play the game anymore, the game ends.
Uh-oh, did I inundate you with more biracialness?! I understand how you feel though. There is no escaping it! (evil laughter)…I think post-project we are going to need a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong
break from all things biracial.
